UAE dealers will cut prices of consumer items during the fasting month of Ramadan by up to 50 per cent at the request of the Ministry of Economy, a Ministry official has said.

Hashim Al Nuaimi, director of the consumer protection division, said the Ministry had decided to increase subsidies to cooperative societies and other outlets by Dh50 million to Dh250 million to encourage them to slash prices in Ramadan, which is expected to start in the first week of June.

He said those outlets have started to stack basic goods for the public and that more than 83 per cent of the vegetable and fruit needs have already been secured.

He said dealers would again offer ‘Ramadan baskets’ containing 15-20 items for Dh100-200, adding that it would be enough for a family of five.

He warned that the Ministry would take strict measures against dealers who violate Ramadan prices.
