The body of an Indian, with wounds on his neck and wrists, was found near Al Jazeera Corniche in Ras Al Khaimah on Monday.

Police and relatives of Haris Karuvariyil, 42, believe he committed suicide. Ras Al Khaimah Police, who  found two blades from the spot, said CCTV footage of the area confirm it to be a suicide.

According to the police report, Karuvariyil died due to severe bleeding.

Karuvariyil, who worked at Walam Cafeteria until 2.45am on Sunday did not return to work the following day, told his relative."So on Monday morning, we started looking for him. That's when we noticed blood stains in his room. He was living close to the beach and was staying alone in a room. His employees live nearby," said his relative Bashir Karuvayil.

Karuvariyil, who owns a couple of cafeterias in partnership with his friends in Ras Al Khaimah, apparently had no financial problems. However, of late he was stressed over minor disputes with his partners. Also he was constructing a house back home and could have been under pressure, said his relative, who rules out any foul play.

Meanwhile, Shijith, a friend of the deceased, also remembers Karuvariyil as being "gloomy in the recent past".

According to a recent report from the Indian embassy, suicide cases are reportedly on the rise among Indians. It said out of 408 deaths reported in 2009, seven per cent were suicides.

The situation in the Northern Emirates is equally high. An official from the Ajman Indian Association said: "We have seen many Indians resorting to suicides."

Karuvariyil, who has been in the emirate for almost two decades, is survived by a wife and two children. His body is at Ras Al Khaimah Saif Hospital morgue and his family has been informed. The body will be repatriated after completing the legal formalities, relatives said.
