A gang of three Afghan nationals are facing charges of breaking into a parked car and stealing money after following the car’s owner, a businessman whom they shadowed the moment he exited after drawing money from a bank.

According to the case that came up for hearing at the Dubai Criminal Court, the three men on August 2 broke a rear glass of the car while the Pakistani businessman was away and stole the Dh250,000 kept in a bag.

The men identified as IAF, a 27-year-old working as a clerk, and two unemployed compatriots NSD, 26, and IDS, 28, kept a watch on people going to Dubai Islamic Bank in Al Twar.

According to the confessions made by IAF, the gang saw a bank customer carrying a seemingly big amount and drove towards Clock Tower in his green Toyota Camry.

The Pakistani businessman Mir Alam, 28, testified before the prosecution that he had parked his car on Al Maktoum Street a little after noon and had ensured the car was properly locked. But, on returning after 10 minutes, he found a rear glass broken and the money gone.

The gang member IAF admitted of using a screwdriver and hammer to break open the glass to gain access to the bag containing the cash. His role was to follow the victims, while the other two kept a watch on people around to ensure no one saw what they did.

Investigators later managed to nab the three and recover Dh35,000 in cash and a screwdriver they used in the crime.

Forensic experts who scanned the car have picked up finger prints that matched those of the gang members.

The court has adjourned the case for verdict by end of October.
