Worker wins Dh1m in damages from employer

A worker who was severely injured on the job site won a court case for Dh1 million damages to be paid by his employer.
The federal supreme court supported an earlier sentence by two courts for the compensation but acquitted an insurance firm from responsibility, the Arabic language daily Emarat Alyoum said.
An appeals court had supported a sentence by another court ordering the insurance company to pay Dh200,000 in compensation to the worker while the rest was to be paid by the employer.
But the federal supreme court decided that the worker is not covered by the insurance company since only the employer is insured.
“The federal supreme court decided that the employer must pay Dh1 million in damages to the worker,” the paper said.
The unnamed worker in a contracting company was in the lift in a building under construction when a large metal object fell on his head. The paper said the incident occurred six years ago but did not elaborate on the location or the worker’s injury.
