In most villages in Saudi Arabia, it is normal to see an old Imam (prayer chief) leading worshippers at mosques. But in the southern village of Jowa, the scene is not quite normal - the Imam is just a child. Although he is only 12 years old, Hassan bin Mousa Yehya now has nearly six years experience as a mosque Imam. “It is a strange scene at the mosque in Jowa….a child is assuming the role of the Imam at the mosque,” Ikhbariya daily said. Hassan said he had been leading village residents at the mosque since he was six years old, adding that he had not faced any problem in acting as an Imam because of his father’s encouragement. “Most of the worshippers in our village are old and not educated….they accepted and liked me because I study at school and recite Koran verses for them,” the boy said. “I am now used to this and do the job skillfully and courageously…I have gained experience which makes me even more enthusiastic.”
