Saudi Arabia has the world’s third highest rate of smokers among its teenage population, standing at 19.3 per cent, a Saudi daily said on Thursday. The online 'Anbaukum' paper put the total smokers in the world’s dominant oil power at around six million, nearly 21.6 per cent of the population. “Saudi Arabia is ranked third in the world in terms of the number of teenage smokers at a ratio of 19.3 per cent,” the paper said. A gender breakdown showed male smokers account for around 35 per cent of the total smokers while females constitute nearly 5.7 per cent. The report, quoting figures in the anti-smoking plan by the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), showed 37 per cent of Saudi Arabia’s university male students are smokers while 10 per cent of female students smoke. Saudi Arabia, which controls over a fifth of the world’s proven oil wealth, has a population of around 27.1 million.
