After a fire at an apartment in Catania town in Sicilia, Italy last weekend, a 45-year-old Sri Lankan migrant, who police suspected of murdering his wife, died in hospital on Monday from severe burns, it was reported on Monday. The charred corpse of Maduri Warnakula, 42-year-old wife of the deceased Sarath Moragoda, was found with a rope around her neck and ankles in the couple’s gutted apartment in the Sicilian city of Catania on Saturday. The newspaper said that although Moragoda suffered critical burns in Saturday’s blaze, investigators suspect that he strangled Warnacula and attempted to destroy evidence of murder by setting her body on fire. Investigators’ think the blaze got out of hand and rapidly spread through the old attic apartment, trapping Moragoda inside. The Catania-based daily ‘La Sicilia’ reported that the police were on Monday questioning the eight-year-old son of the couple, who was attending catechism classes at the time his mother was killed. According to neighbours, the couple had recently been heard arguing heatedly inside their rented apartment in Catania’s run-down Picanello district.
