A state-run radio network says Maoist rebels have shot and killed nine policemen in an ambush in a dense jungle in eastern India. All India Radio said Tuesday that Maoist rebels attacked the policemen's vehicle in a remote area of Chhattisgarh state. It quoted a senior police official, Mukesh Gupta, as saying one policeman was missing after the attack late Monday. The bodies of nine policemen were recovered. The guerrillas, inspired by Chinese revolutionary leader Mao Zedong, have been fighting the government for more than four decades, demanding land and jobs for the poor. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh often says the rebels are the biggest internal threat to India's security.
