Volcano erupts in western Indonesia
A volcano has erupted in western Indonesia, spewing hot lava and sand high into the sky.
Government volcanologist Surono, who goes by only one name, said Mount Sinabung in North Sumatra province started rumbling days ago, prompting authorities to evacuate thousands of residents living along its slopes.
As result, he says, no one was injured when it erupted early Sunday morning.
Indonesia, the world's largest archipelago, is on the so-called Pacific "Ring of Fire", an arc of volcanos and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.
