Thousands of Taiwanese have begun taking part in an annual rite meant to appease the souls of the dead during the islandÕs so-called Ghost Month. Chinese tradition believes the gates of the under world open once every 12 months and ghosts walk the earth freely for 30 days. Tradition says that those who treat them well by burning models of things the ghosts might like are assured a year of peace and prosperity.
