Two untenable situations might work to solve winger issues at Arsenal and Manchester United.

Though after feeding Manchester City last season, Arsenal would be in danger of feeding United this season.

Despite Theo Walcott seeing himself as Arsenal’s next Thierry Henry his time at the Emirates may be up.

Not least because it is quite clear the winger is not in the manager’s preferred starting XI with the likes of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and the returning Aaron Ramsey ahead in the pecking order.

Sir Alex is also all but done with Nani.

Even the fact that Ashley Young is not back may not matter any more.

This is why Walcott at United no longer seems like a strange suggestion.

Not only will Sir Alex find his cover for the wings, freeing Ryan Giggs for a roving role, but Walcott may relish the idea of linking up with Robin Van Persie once again.

Arsene Wenger will not pay up.

He did not for Cesc Fabregas, Samir Nasri or Robin Van Persie.

And Walcott is certainly not in that class.

Not yet at least.

Chelsea and Liverpool may be both still be interested, but in terms of having a clear run at a starting XI with genuine title-winning potential, Manchester United must draw Walcott.

Nobody uses wingers better or with more focus than Manchester United.

And the Robin Van Persie factor is not a small one.

Walcott’s England hopes will fade if all he plays is 15 minutes off the bench and right now all he has is the hope of eyeing a slot in the Capital One Cup tie against Coventry tomorrow night.

He said : “I could play up front against Coventry — that would be a nice gesture.”

It would be different at United.
