UPS, the Atlanta-based package delivery, transportation and logistics firm, has recorded a significant growth in terms of freight loads in the UAE over the past one year, the head of the company in the UAE has said. “In Abu Dhabi, UPS opened an office one year ago. Since then, we have noticed a significant increase in inbound freight loads and transfer clearance between the emirates. Our investment in dedicated brokerage operations at Abu Dhabi’s customs has also been a major contributing factor to our success in the Emirate,” John Tansey, General Manager, UPS UAE, told Emirates 24|7 . However, he didn’t specify the growth figures. “The UAE is an important market for UPS – it is home to our main hub in the region, in Dubai – and one we believe has great potential moving forward,” he added. He said the UAE’s geographical location as a bridge between the US, Europe and the emerging economies in the east, make it particularly interesting to a transportation company. Last month, UPS announced its global revenue increased 13 per cent, generating a 57 per cent increase in operating profit to $1.4 billion (Dh5bn) in the second quarter this year. UPS had also announced a new joint venture, headquartered in Dubai, last year to co-ordinate its express package, freight forwarding and contract logistics services across the Middle East, Turkey and portions of Central Asia. Asked whether the firm has any acquisitions plans in the UAE or the Gulf, he said: “We can’t tell you about specific future acquisition plans, but UPS will make the strategic investments that provide opportunities to grow our company and strengthen the solutions we bring to our customers, wherever they are.”
