Emirates Foundation announced the launch of the first Tawteen Oil and Gas Summer Programme this week. The course 'Maabar Al Najaah' (Bridge to success) is an industry-led endeavour developed by Abu Dhabi Company for Onshore Oil Operations (Adco), Dolphin Energy, and the British Council. The purpose of the initiative is to better prepare university students for energy sector employment by teaching them industry-specific workplace skills that are aligned with labour market demand. The pilot programme is the first of what is expected to be a series of five industry-specific summer programmes. This year, 23 women have been selected to participate in the career preparation course, which will comprise of didactic, simulation, and on-site exercises. Managing Director of the Emirates Foundation, Ahmed Ali Al Sayegh, said: "The Tawteen Oil and Gas Summer Programme 'Maabar Al Najaah' differs from other existing programmes in that it is developed by industry, for industry. This unique advantage will ensure that students have the upper-hand when applying for competitive jobs after graduation." An Adco spokesperson said: "Adco looks forward to benefit from this programme as students will be more aware and better equipped with skills that are essential for the energy industry. Such programmes will help close the gap between the demand for energy industry skills and the attraction of students to the energy sector." Paul Sellers, Director of the British Council in the UAE, said: "The British Council is delighted to be providing programme management and strategic support for the Maabar Al Najaah project, which is developing young nationals in the pursuit of lifelong career goals and highlighting the vital contribution that vocational education makes to meeting the economic development needs of the UAE." The 100-hour course targets individuals early in their Foundation Year, thus allowing enough time for students to choose or change their major according to the experience attained. The programme commenced earlier this week at the Madinat Zayed and Ruwais Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT) and will run through July 10. The theory portion of the course will be administered in a recreated office-style setting at the HCT campuses and focus on developing soft skills, including team work, time management, and critical thinking. Field activities will comprise visits to Dolphin Energy, Adco, and the Centre of Excellence for Applied Research and Training where students will participate in simulations of oil field and gas combined cycle power plant operations. Students will also visit the Buhasa oil field. (Wam)
