Tevez + Adebayor = Dh300m

This was the week Abu Dhabi-owned Manchester City displayed their pulling power. Mark Hughes may not have managed to persuade Kaká to join his Blue Revolution, but United striker Carlos Tevez (£25m) and Arsenal's Emmanuel Adebayor (£25m) both fell for the lure – or was it the lucre? – of the City of Manchester Stadium. Meanwhile, Hughes refused to rule out further transfers, with Chelsea's John Terry topping the list.

Freddie ready to 'bail' out

England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff announced this week that he will retire from Test cricket when the current Ashes series comes to an end on August 24. The 31-year-old was crowned an English hero after his side claimed the 2005 Ashes series, but he has struggled with injuries for the past few years and has decided to instead focus on one-day cricket. Flintoff, nicknamed Freddie by the British press, has played for England 76 times in an 11-year Test career.

Debuts with a difference

World No1 Tiger Woods was grouped with Englishman Lee Westwood and Japanese youngster – and fellow Turnberry debutant – Ryo Ishikawa at the ongoing Open Championships. Both Westwood and Ishikawa shot two under par 68s on the opening day yesterday, while Woods trailed behind after shooting one-over. Five-time Open champion Tom Watson topped the leaderboard after a tremendous round of five under par 65.

Mosley to stand down

Max Mosley, president of world motorsports' governing body, the FIA, confirmed he will not seek re-election later this year and proposed Jean Todt, the former Ferrari principal, as his successor.

Mosley had previously asserted he would not run for a fifth four-year term, but the Englishman in recent weeks had indicated he might be swayed. This week he was unequivocal: "I have decided to reconfirm my decision – I will not be a candidate in October."
