Champions League 2026/27: Six contenders battling to take the European crown

Dubai: I am extremely excited about the Champions League this year. Six teams carry genuine hopes of glory, each with its own identity and individuality. The competition will showcase the very different attributes each brings to the table. When cooking up a successful football team, you need plenty of familiar ingredients: the coach, individual talent, the collective, the exuberance of youth and the wisdom of experience. Then comes the head chef’s secret sauce: style of play, tactical tweaks and in-game management. Let’s take a look at who could earn that additional star. PSG PSG are, quite rightly, the favourites. Back-to-back winners and clearly the strongest team in Europe over the past few years, they have a coach in Luis Enrique who is at the absolute peak of his powers. What Enrique has proven is that the collective is stronger than the combined strength of the individuals. This is a team, and a joy to watch. The midfield axis of Joao Neves and Vitinha provides the foundation for their impressive play. In attack, they have a Rubik’s cube of patterns that can bamboozle the opposition throughout the 90 minutes. Barcelona Hot on PSG’s heels are Barcelona, who, under Hansi Flick, appear to have recovered from the Messi hangover. This is now a Barcelona side that carries the spirit of La Masia, playing on the front foot and operating almost exclusively in the opposition half. As is customary, they blend academy graduates with imported talent. One could argue that they boast the most exciting attack in the competition. Raphinha has already scored 15 goals in La Liga this season, while Lamine Yamal, many believe, is the prince to the vacant Messi-shaped throne. Flick is also a previous winner. He knows how to get there. Arsenal Arsenal, last year’s finalists, are the undisputed champions of defence. This is a team that is incredibly difficult to penetrate, and a strong defence can often carry a side further in a tournament than a lethal attack. They look even more formidable without the ball this year following the addition of Ezri Konsa, while their standout player from last year’s final, Myles Lewis-Skelly, is playing more minutes than ever. But questions remain over their attack, with none of their forwards consistently delivering goals. Will Arsenal have enough in the tank to get over the finish line? Bayern Munich Bayern Munich are another side many are tipping to go all the way. They have developed into a stable and impressive team under Vincent Kompany, who looks to be a very fine coach in the making. They have the Ballon d’Or winner in Harry Kane and Olise, who many would argue was an even greater player than Kane last year. Keep an eye on young Lennart Karl, too, who has all the hallmarks of Germany’s next great talent. But I wonder whether Bayern’s biggest names possess the personality to deliver on the greatest stage. Real Madrid Then there is Real Madrid, whose success in this competition dwarfs that of their rivals. Fifteen-time winners and champions six times in the past 12 years, they have turned football’s greatest achievement into something resembling an annual coin toss. In my opinion, they also have two of the best players in world football in Mbappe and Bellingham. Now they have the wily old fox, Mourinho, at the helm. That man has a winner’s mentality tattooed into his core, and his qualities as a coach appear particularly suited to knockout football. This is a team everyone would prefer to avoid. Manchester City Finally, Manchester City may be something of a wildcard this year. They have a new and exciting coach in Enzo Maresca, tasked with succeeding the Pep Guardiola dynasty. That is never easy. But City have, as usual, an enviable squad of players, including the goal machine that is Erling Haaland. With a possible points deduction looming in the league, the Champions League may represent their greatest opportunity for glory this season. And do not underestimate Maresca. Some may recall his masterclass against PSG in the Club World Cup final while at Chelsea. He knows how to outwit the very best. So, who takes the crown? Who will deliver the showstopper? The current kings? The young pretenders? The wily old fox? I expect PSG to be the team to beat, and I hope we get to see PSG against Barcelona in the knockout stages. That would be a footballing spectacle. But my gut says the old master Mourinho has one final dish to deliver. He has the tournament craft. He has the psychological edge to turn men into warriors for an evening. And in Mbappe and Bellingham, he has the two star ingredients capable of serving up the trophy. ----- Nicholas Bull is a British real estate entrepreneur who has called Dubai home for 12 years.
