Kimi Antonelli: A zooming star on the track

Dubai: I remember exactly where I was when Andrea Kimi Antonelli crossed the finish line and etched his name into Formula 1 history. It was midnight in the UAE, my laptop glowing in the dim light of my living room as I watched the Mexico City Grand Prix unfold. The tension was palpable and the stakes enormous. As Max Verstappen held off Lewis Hamilton in a breathtaking final stint, Antonelli’s third-place finish was all he needed to clinch the 2026 Drivers’ Championship and, with it, a record that stunned the world. At just 20 years and 68 days old, Antonelli shattered Sebastian Vettel’s long-standing record to become the youngest Formula 1 world champion in history. For context, Vettel was 23 years and 134 days old when he claimed his first World Drivers’ Championship. Only in his second season with the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team, Antonelli joined the rarefied ranks of Jacques Villeneuve and Lewis Hamilton, drivers who claimed the ultimate prize in only their second season. But perhaps what makes Antonelli’s achievement even more remarkable is the journey he took to get here, and the noise he had to silence along the way. When Toto Wolff made the bold decision to bring Antonelli into Mercedes, the scepticism was deafening. Social media was awash with criticism. Critics questioned his maturity, his readiness and his very place on the grid. But under the relentless glare of the spotlight and the enormous expectations that come with driving a Silver Arrow, Antonelli thrived. His 2026 campaign was a masterclass in composure and talent. Nine Grand Prix victories, including an unprecedented run of five consecutive wins from China to Monaco, set the tone. But it was his home triumph at Monza that truly defined his season. Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli of Italy steers his car during the Formula One Mexico Grand Prix auto race in Mexico City, Sunday, Nov. 1, 2026. AP Starting 19th on the grid, Antonelli fought through the field with a mixture of daring and composure far beyond his years, taking the chequered flag in front of an ecstatic sea of Tifosi. He became the first Italian Formula 1 world champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953, ending a drought that had lasted more than seven decades. Watching Antonelli achieve his childhood dream, I couldn’t help but reflect on the magnitude of the accomplishment. Formula 1 is a crucible where talent is tested and character is forged. Antonelli faced the pressure, the doubters and the legacy of those who came before him. His response came not through words, but through results. As I closed my laptop, one question lingered: Is Kimi Antonelli Formula 1’s next great star? If 2026 is any indication, we may be witnessing the emergence of Formula 1’s next superstar. And I, for one, am grateful to have watched history unfold live, in the middle of the night, from thousands of miles away.
