Dubai: Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is currently implementing the Dubai Metro Blue Line project and plans to launch the tender for the Gold Line project by the end of this year, according to Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA.

Al Tayer said the combined cost of the two projects is estimated at around Dh55 billion. The projects will increase the length of the Dubai Metro network from 90km currently to 162km after the completion of the Blue Line in 2029 and the Gold Line in 2032, representing an 80% increase.

He said Dubai's metro projects are being delivered according to the highest international standards, following clear plans and precise timelines, under the supervision of national and international engineers and experts whose combined experience exceeds 2,500 years.

Al Tayer was speaking during a press conference announcing the first edition of the Dubai International Rail Conference and Exhibition 2027, which will be held at the Dubai World Trade Centre from May 31 to June 2, 2027.

Held under the theme "Building the Future of Railways and Mobility", the event is expected to attract more than 5,000 participants and over 60 exhibitors from international companies and institutions. More than 70 speakers, including officials, decision-makers, industry leaders and specialists, will take part in discussions on developments in the railway sector and the future of sustainable mobility.

Al Tayer said railway networks and modern transport systems are key drivers of economic growth, urban development and sustainability, while also improving quality of life and strengthening connectivity between communities and markets.

He noted that railways form the backbone of mass transit systems, adding that the Dubai Metro accounts for 40% of total public transport users in the emirate and has carried nearly three billion passengers since its launch on September 9, 2009.

For his part, Abdulmohsen Ibrahim, Executive Director of the Rail Agency at the RTA, said the Blue Line project is progressing on schedule and has not been directly affected by recent geopolitical developments in the region.

He said the project is set to open on September 9, 2029, and has reached 24% completion.
