Fed decision in focus as uncertainty grows over Warsh's next move

Washington: The Federal Reserve is widely expected to leave interest rates unchanged on Wednesday, but uncertainty surrounding Chair Kevin Warsh's policy intentions is keeping markets on edge ahead of the central bank's decision. The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) is scheduled to announce its policy decision at 2 p.m. EDT (1800 GMT), with Warsh due to hold a news conference 30 minutes later. Unlike previous Fed leadership, Warsh has adopted a limited-guidance approach, offering few clues about future policy direction. That has made forecasting the outcome of this week's meeting more difficult than usual. Inflation concerns remain Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh. Warsh, who became Fed Chair in May, has repeatedly stressed that he has "no tolerance" for inflation remaining above the Federal Reserve's 2% target. Although inflation accelerated earlier this year amid rising energy and food costs linked to the US-Iran conflict and strong demand associated with artificial intelligence investments, price pressures have eased recently. US consumer inflation slowed to 3.5% year-on-year in June, down from 4.2% in May, while oil prices have fallen sharply amid renewed hopes for a ceasefire between the United States and Iran. At the Fed's previous meeting in June, policymakers unanimously voted to keep the benchmark federal funds rate within a 3.50% to 3.75% range. Split among policymakers Since then, several Federal Reserve officials have expressed concern that inflation remains too high. Dallas Federal Reserve President Lorie Logan and Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack have both indicated support for tighter monetary policy to ensure inflation returns to target. Analysts believe at least one policymaker could dissent if the committee chooses to leave rates unchanged. Despite those concerns, economists generally expect the Fed to remain on hold for now. Krishna Guha, Vice Chairman of Evercore ISI, said: "We think the Fed will probably not hike. It would be odd to do so right after the better June inflation print, given an uncomplicated path to hike in September if needed." However, he added that uncertainty remains because of Warsh's reluctance to signal his policy strategy. Markets price in possibility of a surprise Financial markets are currently pricing in roughly a one-in-three chance of a 25-basis-point rate increase. Some economists argue that acting now could reduce the need for more aggressive tightening later. Neil Dutta, Head of Economics at Renaissance Macro Research, said: "It's better to do a little now instead of a lot later." The Fed cut interest rates three times in 2025 under former Chair Jerome Powell amid concerns about a weakening labour market. While employment conditions have since stabilised, inflation has re-emerged as a key concern for policymakers. Rate cut expectations fade A rate cut is considered highly unlikely at this stage. The Fed's latest economic projections showed that only one policymaker expected interest rates to be lower by the end of 2026. President Donald Trump, who appointed Warsh, has continued to advocate lower borrowing costs, arguing that US rates should be among the lowest globally. Speaking aboard Air Force One on Monday, Trump said: "We should have the lowest interest rate in the world." He added that Warsh was constrained by other members of the Federal Reserve Board. Focus on Warsh's message More than the rate decision itself, investors will be closely watching Warsh's press conference for clues about future policy direction. At his June press conference, Warsh defended his decision to provide minimal forward guidance, saying markets should respond to economic data rather than central bank signalling. Barclays economists said the lack of clarity has encouraged speculation that the new Fed Chair could surprise markets with an unexpected rate increase designed to reinforce the Fed's anti-inflation credentials. Analysts said the greatest uncertainty is not whether rates will remain unchanged today, but how Warsh intends to steer monetary policy in the months ahead. With inflation still above target and policymakers divided, Wednesday's decision could provide the first major indication of how the Fed will operate under its new leadership.
