Hili Forum highlights growing youth interest in shaping the Gulf's future

Abu Dhabi: The strong presence of young people at Hili Forum 2026 reflected a growing interest among the younger generation in the issues shaping the Gulf's future and a clear desire to engage more closely with policymaking and strategic thinking. Held in Abu Dhabi under the theme "The Gulf at a Crossroads: Conflict, Consequences and Course Correction", the forum examined issues that extend beyond traditional diplomatic discussions to include subjects directly linked to the future of young people. These ranged from regional security and conflicts to the economy, energy, water and food, as well as artificial intelligence, data, drones, cybersecurity and space. The forum's agenda was organised around three main pillars: geopolitics, geoeconomics and geotechnology. The significance of youth participation lies in the fact that the generation attending the forum today will be among those most affected by the transformations currently taking place and will eventually be responsible for managing their consequences. Issues being discussed today, including Gulf security, supply-chain disruptions and the rise of artificial intelligence, are expected to influence future employment opportunities, education systems, sources of income, privacy and daily security. The forum highlighted a broader understanding of security among younger generations, extending beyond traditional concepts related to military threats and border protection. For many young people, security also includes economic stability, employment prospects, data protection, food and water security, and the ability to keep pace with rapid technological change. This wider perspective was reflected in sessions dedicated to the Gulf's security architecture, deterrence, the Strait of Hormuz, chokepoints and blockades, as well as discussions on data and technology. Participants noted that cyberattacks, supply-chain disruptions and data breaches can have consequences comparable to more conventional security threats. The forum also raised questions about how younger generations view artificial intelligence, whether as an opportunity or a challenge, and how it may reshape education, workforce development, privacy and national sovereignty. The visible participation of young Emirati women added another dimension to the discussions, reflecting the growing role of Emirati women in fields such as security, politics, economics and technology. In the UAE, interest in these issues is closely linked to the country's focus on technology, innovation, the knowledge economy and future readiness. Questions raised by young participants focused on how the UAE can maintain stability and economic openness during periods of regional uncertainty, strengthen the benefits of its international partnerships, and identify emerging sectors that will contribute to the prosperity of future generations. Participants noted that the true value of youth engagement lies not only in attending discussions but also in contributing to them. Opportunities to interact directly with experts and decision-makers help foster early strategic awareness and encourage greater participation in shaping future policies. For many attendees, the key question emerging from the forum was no longer simply what the future holds for the Gulf, but what role young people can play in helping shape that future.
